The Game

For the GMTK Game Jam 2024, yanko397 and I made this little game. Yes, the visuals are terrible, we are programmers because we are incapable of art.

Placing the bricks was fun but I also figured there was a grid due to the background being tiled. When I tried to play the game on my browser the music was super distorted so I had to turn it off but when I went back to your itch page it worked in the background? Good music, I think the goal of the game was unclear to me as I was just placing cubes randomly and trying to fill it out. Also noticed that the score was not increasing as I was placing shapes?

The score only increases when you form a complete rectangle (without gaps or protruding parts) out of the boxes and use the right mouse button to draw a rectangle around it.

The distortion of the music is weird, we didn't experience it in testing o.O what browser do you use?

I was using Opera GX, I also could hear the music fine after the application was no longer actively running (just being on the webpage).

I didn't realize I had to draw a rectangle with the right mouse button! Cool mechanic but maybe a little unclear?

I found the main mechanic a bit unclear. The color of the boxes led me to believe I had to group them together by color and it wasn't until only a little time was left that I realized that was not the case. I think also the game could benefit from snapping for the boxes, as well as a more forgiving selection.  I think the core concept is good though, I liked the idea that you'd build bigger and bigger boxes.

Some bugs:

  • Selecting Exit does nothing in the HTML build, just freezes the game
  • Music stopped playing after a single song

Thanks for playing and for the input! ^^

Yeah the controls still need a bit of refinement, maybe we'll get around to it
